Bali Dive Sites - Amed

Bali Diving Newsletter 2010The diving location of Amed, on Bali's north east coast, can often be overlooked as most divers head for the 'USAT Liberty' shipwreck in neighbouring Tulamben. Amed, however can offer similar marine life to Tulamben but without the crowds, so in the busy summer months of August and September, you can still enjoy a relatively peaceful days diving.

The two hour drive along Bali's east coast is a scenic one with traditional villages and spectacular views of the luscious green rice terraces. On arrival at Amed's black sandy beach, you'll grab your gear and board a local jukung for the five minute ride out to the reef (jukungs can be a great source of amusement after diving especially if you are unlucky enough to have one without a ladder!) Once you're ready to go, you'll enter the water with a simple roll back and then descend down to the Amed wall. Temperatures year round are a consistent 28 degrees so a 3mm suit is all that is necessary and as a norm conditions are also favourable offering relatively easy diving for any certification level.

The rich reefs in this area are abundant with marine life so keep an eye out for bumphead parrot fish, reef sharks, blue spotted sting rays and turtles; for the macro enthusiast or underwater photographer a fine array of macro life can also be discovered including beautiful nudibranchs, squat lobster and pygmy seahorse (Phil our instructor recently came across six on one sea fan!)

If you are traveling to Bali with a non diving family then Amed also makes for a great snorkeling day out, the beach is not as rocky as Tulamben giving you nice easy access in to the water, and the marine life in the shallow areas is very rich with bat fish, emperor angel fish, harlequin sweet lips, moray eels and clown anemone fish.

Blue Season Bali runs regular trips to Amed, for more information go to our web site or contact us for further information; we are always happy to discuss Bali diving!
