Bali Diving Newsletter 2010Tips from the Experts - This month we will shed some light on diving in current rich waters and more specific on how to recognize the strength or direction of the current.

Whilst under water you can have a look at the marine life to help you determine the strength of the current present. If the fishes are swimming around in all possible directions without showing too much movement, then you can easily say that there is a light current. If those fishes that are normally out in the open, such as oriental sweetlips are hiding under table corals or behind coral outcrops, then we could call this a medium current. If you can also see that all small fishes that are normally swarming over table corals, are now hiding between the branches of the table corals, then we can call this a strong current.

To determine the direction of the current we just need to pay attention to the way the fish are facing. Fish will always face the current, and thus we will be looking straight at them whilst diving with the current.
