Tec Diving Instructor Trainer - Tom West

Bali Technical Diving Courses with PADI Course Director and Tec Instructor Tom WestWhether you are an experienced Tec Diver or it's your first technical dive, you still need the assurance that your Tec Diving Instructor is someone who is going to be there at all times guiding you through your dives. We are very lucky to haveTechnical Diving Instructor Trainer, Tom West in charge of the technical diving division here at Blue Season Bali.

Teamwork and safety are the keys to success in many endeavors in life. Another is the posession of an expert education on your subject matter. The collective knowledge and skills posessed by the team here at Blue Season Bali have no rival on the island. Don't believe us? Your technical instructor should be able to thoroughly explain all of the modern theories behind diving physics and physiology, like, for example, the Meyer-Overton hypothesis or the effects of oxygen-induced vasoconstriction on effective decompression. Be smart and do your research to find out if that bargain course is really a bargain. If three words could describe our team diving and teaching philosophy, they would be: informed, diligent and precise. (The fourth is obviously: fun!)

Tec Diving - More about Westy

Technical Diving Instructor Trainer, Tom West is also the Diving Internship Manager for Blue Season Bali and has a wealth of knowledge about diving in many specialized areas.

Tom is a natural educator. You can find him smiling his way through the basics with PADI DSD's or polishing the finer points of decompression theory with technical instructor candidates. Tom is dedicated to providing you with the best possible tec diving experience and training. With over 3000 logged dives he has a lot of experience with the deep dive sites around Asia, including the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and New Zealand.

Bali's technical diving scene has benefited since Tom's arrival in 2008. He brought with him a fresh outlook on technical diving, including updated procedures, a higher priority on safety and an increased emphasis on team awareness. Tom has even certified PADI course directors in Bali in their first DSAT TecRec programs. If he is the experienced divers' choice for their technical diver training, why not yours?

When he's not teaching at Blue Season Bali, Tom is actively promoting the Bali Technical Exploration Team as they work to chart new technical dive sites and follow up on leads for wrecks along the North Bali coast.

Information about Tom:

Technical Fun Diving - Technical day trips in Bali

One of Westy's real passions is getting out and about for fun tec dives in Bali. Why? Because it's FUN! If you want to join the Bali Technical Exploration Team for a day of technical diving and you are already certified as a PADI TecDeep Diver (or equivalent/higher) then you should be qualified to join the dive.

Tom will want to have a discussion about dive planning, gas selection, gas matching, team protocols and emergency procedures. Also, don't be upset if he asks you to jump in the pool for a quick confined water checkout before going out for the dives. He's just doing his job- and he does it well. He views every dive as an instructional opportunity and is happy spending his time helping technical divers remediate training they have forgotten or that which was taught to them improperly to begin with.

Tom operates a tight ship and always places the safety of his technical diving team as his top priority. In a technical decompression situation, there's no time for "Oh man, we probably should have talked about what to do if this happened..."

The cost for a day's fun tec diving starts at USD185.00 per person.

Our Tec Philosophy - Tom's take on tec:

Ask any seasoned technical diver and they'll tell you that apart from analyzing your own gases, the most important aspect of technical diving is the team with which you choose to dive. We have chosen Tom West to lead our technical diving division because of his serious (but fun!) approach to technical diving and technical diving training.

What does Tom have to say about technical diving? Well, we asked him:

"By its very nature, technical diving involves more inherent risks than does recreational diving. We train and use specialized equipment, planning and team-based procedures to help mitigate these additional risks.

Good training and good teamwork are vital to conducting technical dives properly. Things like propulsion techniques, buoyancy and trim are all part of a diver's personal arsenal against risk. These skills are the foundation of what I call 'sexy diving.'

Beyond your personal tec diving skills are team-based tec diving skills. I'm here to help tec students and tec divers communicate effectively, use team resources in the event of an emergency and follow safe gas-switching protocols.

Basically, technical diving is a great way to explore and access dive sites that few people will ever see, but if you are not willing to do it right, then don't do it at all."

Technical Instructor Courses, Technical Divemaster Training, and Technical Diving Internships are also available by application. Leadership level training is avaliable by application only because the sad fact is- there are too many poor technical instructors now diluting the quality of technical diver training worldwide. Once again, technical diving is a serious sport and it is not for everyone. If you think you have the attitude it takes to become a quality technical instructor or divemaster, please feel free to contact Tom West directly at tom@blueseasonbali.com. He will be happy to discuss the options that are available to help you meet your goals in technical diving.
