Fish Swarms in Nusa Penida Corals

Snorkeling with the Beauty of Fish Shoals in Nusa Penida Corals

Nusa Penida is a pristine island off the coast of Bali, it is filled with some of Indonesia’s most breathtaking coral reefs. Among the many underwater wonders, shoals of fish in Nusa Penida corals stand out as a true natural marvel. These mesmerizing schools of fish—ranging from shimmering sardines to vibrant fusiliers also known as Caesionidae and curious batfish—move in perfect synchrony, creating a living spectacle of color and movement. This rich biodiversity is supported by the island’s healthy coral ecosystems, making it a top destination for marine lovers and underwater photographers.

Our first stop was a vibrant reef just off the coast, where we geared up and gently slipped into the cool, crystal-clear water. The moment our faces went under, it felt like we were transported into another world. Below us stretched endless coral gardens teeming with life—exactly like the image captured from our dive.

One of the most surreal moments during our snorkeling trip happened as we glided over a wide patch of reef and suddenly found ourselves surrounded by a dense shoal of tiny reef fish. Schools of small black fish swirled around us, darting playfully above the textured coral. The surrounding ambience like the sunlight streamed through the water, illuminating the scene like an underwater cathedral and also enriching the sighting of the shoals. In the distance, other snorkelers floated peacefully, their air bubbles drifting up like shimmering pearls making the scenery feel even more surreal.

There are also a few fun facts about why small fish often form shoals(or also known as schools).

Fun Fact: Why Fish Swim in Shoals

  • Fish form shoals (or schools) not just to protect themselves from predators, but also to conserve energy. Swimming in groups reduces water resistance, much like cyclists drafting behind one another.

  • Some species communicate through subtle body movements or even color changes—an incredible example of non-verbal, non-human communication happening right before your eyes!
